This feels like a no-brainer that must have been the approach since the beginning, but apparently and surprisingly not.
I’m even feeling a bit silly writing this at the end of 2020, but with everything like the climate crisis and all else going on: Hey come on, really, isn’t it time that we seriously started putting our shit together?
The majority of products you see in the supermarket still come with crazy amounts of material wasted in packaging, just because they want to present us the hummus in a fancy card box, after the first plastic layer that already protects it. Or the toothpaste: It’s a classical example but why do they come in boxes anyway? And consumer goods is just the beginning of the story.
Designers, decision-makers and everyone else need to think in ways not to push forward this way of thinking anymore. As consumers, we should be self-aware of this issue and stop supporting products that don’t consider sustainability in the way they are produced, packaged, or distributed; otherwise it seems products are not going to do this for us.
I thought this would be straight forward, but apparently, it’s not. So let’s act upon it.
